HOOVER, Ala. -- University of Florida linebacker Dustin Doe was arrested Thursday night in Gainesville for driving with a suspended license.
Florida coach Urban Meyer said Friday that Doe is suspended from the football team until his legal issues are resolved. Doe, a senior linebacker and former starter, has been cited for driving with a suspended license four times since February. Doe's license was initially suspended for an unpaid traffic ticket. Doe paid the fine, according to court records, but failed to pay a late fee.
``Dustin had been suspended from team activities while resolving his parking ticket issues and driving with a suspended license,'' Meyer said in a statement. ``Those issues have not been taken care of, and as a result, he will not be with us when we begin practice.''
The Gators begin preseason practice Aug. 6 and begin practicing in full pads Aug. 12. Doe, a second-team weakside linebacker, started three games in 2008 but was limited most of the year with a sports hernia. He had midseason surgery to correct the ailment and played well toward the end of the season. He started 13 games in 2007.
Doe was issued a criminal traffic citation in June and charged with a second-degree misdemeanor when he was pulled over for knowingly driving with a suspended license. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 24 for that charge. Doe was booked into the Alachua County Jail on Thursday night for his second criminal traffic citation and was released on $1,000 bond early Friday morning. Doe was arrested for affray in 2007 but those charges were later dropped.
ADVERTISING THE VOLS
Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin said Friday at the Southeastern Conference Media Days that the University of Tennessee is buying a billboard in South Florida to advertise its football team to high school prospects.
``There will be a billboard going up there in the next month that I think you'll be excited to see, that will give you something to write about,'' Kiffin told The Miami Herald. ``I'm not going to give you anymore than that. Got to give you something to look forward to.''
Kiffin made a splash in January when he lured Pahokee receiver Nu'Keese Richardson away from the Gators. Richardson, who had been committed to the Gators for many months, signed with Tennessee on National Signing Day in February. On Friday, Kiffin credited assistant coach Eddie Gran for persuading Richardson to de-commit with the Gators and sign with Tennessee. Gran, who coached at Auburn last season, has strong ties throughout Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.
``What [Gran] did with Nu'Keese -- I've told this story before -- it is phenomenal to have one month before signing day and have a kid committed to the powerful Florida Gators off a national championship and to be a receiver -- to go there in the state of Florida and just to get him to come on a trip. I was shocked,'' Kiffin said.
