There were times last year as a freshman when DeQuan Jones said he was too focused on making a splash with a thunderous dunk or an athletic play.
In basketball vernacular, he wasn't ``letting the game come to him.'' The 6-5 swingman from Stone Mountain, Ga. hasn't played like that as a sophomore.
Wednesday night's 77-58 win over Florida Gulf Coast at BankUnited Center provided further proof of that growth as Jones finished with a career-high 16 points in yet another efficient shooting game.
``DeQuan is starting to understand the ways he can score and finding the right ways to score,'' UM coach Frank Haith said.
``We basically played a team that played zone and made it difficult for us to score in the paint. DJ was still 6 of 8 from the floor. He's gotten better as a shooter. But it's all about him understanding what good shots are.''
In the Hurricanes' first six games, Jones has shot 19 of 27 from the field (.704). That's quite a turnaround from last year when he shot a team low .337 percent and at times played out of control.
``I think DJ gets better every day,'' said guard James Dews, who chipped in with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range. ``Every time I watch him play, he shows me something different. Last year, a lot of it was him growing having that athleticism.
``Now, he's developed a jump shot. He's a smart basketball player.''
The Hurricanes began the season shooting better than 50 percent in their first five games, setting a new school record.
Wednesday, with the Eagles playing zone and collapsing on forward Dwayne Collins in the paint, Miami (6-0) was forced to launch from long distance.
The Canes, who shot 40 percent from the field, chucked up a school record 36 three-point attempts and made 13.
UM (6-0) led 39-23 at halftime and extended its lead to as many as 26 points with 6:57 left in the second half. The Eagles (0-4) were led by Anthony Banks' 15 points and five rebounds.
The Hurricanes are off to their best start since they won their first 12 games in 2007, but won't be getting Thanksgiving off.
``We got weights, practice, film and then we eat,'' Haith said. ``It's going to be a fun day.
``I'm going to make it fun.''
