The top-seeded Florida International University volleyball team defeated North Texas, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15), on Thursday afternoon in the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship quarterfinals at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Ky. With the win the Panthers improve to 29-2 on the season and have now won 22 consecutive matches.

The first set saw FIU jump out to a seven-point lead at 18-11 before three straight points by North Texas brought the Mean Green within four at 18-14. Senior Yarimar Rosa slammed home a kill and recorded a service ace to put the Panthers on top, 20-14, and a North Texas attack error would put FIU's lead back to seven.

On the strength of a Mean Green violation and a block by freshman Jovana Bjelica and sophomore Andrea Lakovic, the Panthers took a 23-14 lead. North Texas recorded a kill and a block to make it 23-16, and senior Isadora Rangel retaliated with a kill to put FIU in set-point position. North Texas kept the set going with a kill up the middle, but junior Natalia Valentin passed to senior Olga Vergun for a kill from the right side and the Panthers took set one, 25-17, to go up 1-0 for the match.

The start of the second set featured both squads battling back and forth, but FIU took a lead and never looked back, going ahead 18-10. North Texas registered a trio of points to come within five at 18-13 before the Panthers countered with three straight points of their own to put the score at 21-13. Vergun then recorded three consecutive kills to put FIU in set-point position with Bjelica on the service line and FIU went on to win set two, 25-13, following a Mean Green attack error.

Up 2-0 for the match, FIU came out in the third set on fire, running out to an 18-9 lead. North Texas tallied a point but a Mean Green service error put FIU on top, 19-10. A Panther violation put the score at 19-11 but Rangel slammed home a kill from the left side to make it 20-11.

North Texas scored two of the next three points to put the score at 21-13 before Vergun struck again from the right side and then Rosa put down a hard kill from the left side to increase FIU's advantage to 23-13. A Panther service error made it 23-14 but Rosa tacked on another kill to put FIU in match-point position at 24-14. The Mean Green managed another point but Lakovic registered a kill on a pass from Valentin to close out the set, as the Panthers won the third stanza, 25-15, to take home a 3-0 match victory.

Rosa led FIU with 16 kills while Vergun added 10 kills as the Panthers hit .311 for the match. Valentin recorded a double-double with team-bests of 35 assists and 13 digs, and Rosa and Bjelica each had a pair of service aces on the day. Defensively, Lakovic led the Panthers with four blocks.
