With more newcomers than returning players, the Barry University women's basketball team will need to come together quickly to make it three consecutive winning seasons.

Gone are the likes of Princess Bailey, Kristy Singletary and Lucy Martinez, three of the Buccaneers' top four scorers from 2008-09.

The team will lean heavily on senior forward Christina Thompson, who missed all but two games last season with a torn ACL.

Thompson set a school record for three-pointers in a season two years ago.

``She's also a tremendous defensive player, so to have her back with her leadership is great,'' coach Bill Sullivan said.

Sullivan knows like any coach with such a young team, it will at times be a struggle having so many fresh faces, but he is encouraged with several aspects of his squad.

``We have some depth at the perimeter, and hopefully that will be one of our strengths,'' said Sullivan, who added that guard play is another strong point.

Another key component for the Bucs will be Mariesa Greene, a senior forward who was second on the team with 12.3 points per game a year ago.

Greene earned Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference honors, in addition to earning a spot on the All-South Region team.

In addition to Greene, Sullivan said he is counting on players such as Shanna Suttington, a sophomore guard, and Alicia Mullings, a junior guard/forward, to step up.

Suttington played in all 28 games last season but made only four starts, averaging 4.6 points. Mullings is a junior college transfer from Phoenix.

SSC play begins for the Buccaneers on Jan. 2 with a visit to Eckerd followed by another road game against Rollins four days later.

Barry's first conference home game is Jan. 13 against Florida Tech.
