GAINESVILLE -- Florida coach Urban Meyer said he planned to speak with star Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes on Sunday about Spikes' apparent unsportsmanlike conduct during the Gators' 41-17 win against Georgia.

No. 1 Florida (8-0, 6-0 SEC) defeated Georgia for the 17th time in 20 years on Saturday at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

Several times during the game, the emotions of both teams' players boiled over and resulted in unsportsmanlike penalties, confrontations and verbal exchanges. At one point during the game, Spikes, a senior and team captain, appeared to let his emotions get the better of him when he reached into the facemask of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey, in an apparent attempt to gouge Ealey's eyes.

The incident occurred during a pile-up, and though Spikes was not flagged for the behavior, strong video evidence showed Spikes shoving his hand into Ealey's facemask. On Sunday during his weekly post-game conference call, Meyer indicated that he was unaware of the eye-gouging incident but UF's coach also said, ``If that's the case, I'll have a very serious talk with him.''

Spikes had a game-high 10 tackles against Georgia and returned an interception for a touchdown during the fourth quarter. A native of North Carolina, Spikes was an All-American in 2008 and was named an All-SEC defender in 2008 and 2007. Spikes returned to action against Georgia after sitting out the Gators' 29-19 victory against Mississippi State on Oct. 24 because of pulled groin muscle.

Though Spikes did not play against Mississippi State, he said on Saturday after the win against Georgia that he participated in a locker-room speech in Starkville, Miss., shortly after the Gators' unimpressive performance against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The speech, which included input from quarterback Tim Tebow, motivated the team in a positive fashion, according to Spikes.

``It was all positive,'' Spikes said Saturday.

``We came together -- me and Tebow -- got the team together and we kind of got things right.''

Meyer was adamant on Sunday that the locker-room atmosphere after the win against Mississippi State helped to galvanize the team's resolve. Whatever was said apparently worked. The Gators put together their best performance in nearly a month on Saturday in Jacksonville. Tebow accounted for four touchdowns and the Gators defense had four interceptions, all by linebackers.

On Sunday, Florida remained No. 1 in the Associated Press, Coaches and Harris Interactive polls and the Gators were listed atop the Bowl Championship Series standings for the third consecutive week. In addition to dominating the polls, Florida clinched the SEC Eastern Division title this weekend when South Carolina lost at Tennessee on Saturday.

With two SEC games remaining on its schedule, Florida is undefeated in conference games while South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia each have three losses in league play.

Florida will host Vanderbilt (2-7, 0-5) at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
