Barry men's golf rallies to win Shark Invitational
The Barry University men's golf team overcame a five-shot deficit to defeat Lynn University by three shots at the NSU Shark Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern at the Haig Course at PGA National on Tuesday.
Barry finished at 14-under-par 850 for the 54-hole tournament. Lynn was next at 853, followed by Indianapolis (870), Oglethorpe (888) and Nova Southeastern (893).
Barry's Chris Carlin shot a 6-under 66, the lowest score of the tournament, to win medalist honors at 8-under 208. Patricio Salem and Steven Brame of Lynn tied for second place at 5-under.
Ben Vertz was Nova's highest team finisher at 5-over 221, good enough for 25th place. Nova's Bobby Bode, competing as an individual but not part of the team, tied for 19th place at 4-over.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Nova Southeastern: Nova successfully defended its title in the Shark Invitational, defeating Rollins by one shot in a 36-hole tournament at the Palmer Course at PGA National. Barry University finished third.
Taylor Collins and Sandra Changkija tied for second for Nova at 2-over 146. Joanna Coe of Rollins won medalist honors by finishing at 5-under 139.
``I am proud of the way our women played,'' Nova coach Kevin Marsh said. ``Our entire team finished inside the top 10, showing the great depth we have. This was our first opportunity to play against a Division II field and [NCAA] regional competition. We hope to continue to build on this momentum and finish the fall season solid.''
It was Nova's fifth consecutive victory, and it has won 10 of its past 12 tournaments.
VOLLEYBALL
Miami Dade College def. Brevard Community College 25-19, 25-3, 25-14: Yenifer Calcano had 14 kills and 17 digs, Anne Stebner-Chala 11 kills and five digs and Joana Alvarez nine kills and four digs for MDC (19-3, 9-0 Southern Conference).
Nova Southeastern def. Lynn 25-21, 25-23, 35-33: Lucia Cizmarova had 14 kills and Valia Petrova had 46 assists and 12 digs for visiting Nova (13-8, 4-4 Sunshine State Conference). Lynn is 15-6 and 4-4. Taylor Pohlman added 12 kills and Carly Perschnick had 11 for Nova.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Nova Southeastern 2, Rollins 2: Elisa Cabot and Aubrey Fondy scored in the first half for host Nova (6-4-1, 3-2-1 SSC). Rollins is 9-1-2 and 3-0-1.
Saint Leo 1, Barry 0: Sara Macko scored in the ninth minute for visiting Saint Leo (6-2-1, 3-2-0 SSC). Emily Pratt made 11 saves for Barry (3-10-0, 1-4 SSC).
