FSU outlasts UM in soccer
The University of Miami women's soccer team (6-6-0, 1-2-0 in the ACC) faced its third consecutive ranked opponent in the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles (10-1-0, 3-0-0), on Sunday afternoon.
Florida State scored twice in a two-minute span in just the fourth and sixth minutes, and the Hurricanes were never able to recover in a 4-1 loss.
FSU outshot the Canes 10-5 in the first half and built a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Julianne Rickers scored UM's lone goal.
``I give credit to FSU for scoring early off a couple set pieces,'' UM coach Tricia Taliaferro said. ``Despite the early goals against us, I thought we played well and created quite a push in the second half.''
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Florida Southern 3, Barry 2 (OT): Kerri-Ann Brown scored the deciding goal four minutes into overtime as host Florida Southern beat Barry.
Melissa Madrid and Michelle Tarasiuk scored for Barry.
VOLLEYBALL
Miami d. Georgia Tech 25-22, 24-26, 31-29, 25-27, 15-9: Sophomore Lane Carico tallied a match-high 30 kills to lead host University of Miami (9-6, 2-3 ACC) past Georgia Tech (10-5, 4-1).
FIU d. Middle Tennessee, 25-20, 27-29, 25-20, 26-24: Host FIU improved to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in the Sun Belt Conference with a victory over Middle Tennessee.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Hirano leads Canes: Sophomore Jennifer Hirano shot 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 12th to lead the University of Miami after the first round of the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate at Macon, Ga.
Florida State (288) leads the field after shooting even-par as a team. Coastal Carolina (297), Georgia (298), Furman (300) and James Madison (305) round out the top five. The Hurricanes shot 309 after the first round.
UM junior Maria Ronderos continued her strong play with a 76. She is tied for 23rd place.
