FIU volleyball star Rosa returns with a flourish

ppelegrin@MiamiHerald.com

After missing more than two weeks with a dislocated finger, FIU volleyball star Yarimar Rosa picked up where she left off last season.

Rosa, a three-time All-American who led the nation in kills last season, recorded 32 kills in victories against Troy and South Alabama.

With Rosa's return to the lineup, the Golden Panthers continued their strong start, improving to 12-2.

For her impressive efforts, Rosa was named the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.

It was the 10th time Rosa, a senior, has won the honor -- a Sun Belt record.

``To be honest, I didn't expect to win player of the week since I was out for almost a month,'' Rosa said. ``So when coach [Danijela Tomic] told me, I was shocked but so happy at the same time, knowing that the injury was just a challenge for me, making me a more mature player.''

Rosa recorded team-highs in both matches with a season-high-tying 17 kills against Troy and 15 kills against South Alabama.

Rosa had a hitting percentage of .284 and a team-leading 5.33 kills per set.
