Milestone moments for UM soccer

The University of Miami women's soccer team scored once in each half to earn its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season, 2-0 over the No. 9 Maryland Terrapins.

The win gave Hurricanes coach Tricia Taliaferro her 100th career victory, but also saw sophomore Vikki Alonzo record her 15th career shutout to break a tie with former Cane Lauren McAdam for the most in school history.

``Every win feels good, but you do like to compete well against your old school.'' Taliaferro said.

After two straight shutout losses, the Miami (6-5-0) offense responded against Maryland (8-2).

WOMEN'S SOCCER

FIU 1, Western Kentucky 0: The Golden Panthers (3-5-2) came away with their first conference win of the season as junior midfielder Kassandra Sorzano scored the game's lone goal in overtime. It was FIU's first victory at Western Kentucky (6-3-1).

West Florida 3, Nova Southeastern 1: West Florida handed host Nova Southeastern its third consecutive defeat. The Sharks, 0-2 in the Sunshine State Conference, are 4-4 this season. The Argonauts remain unbeaten at 8-0-0.

MEN'S SOCCER

FAU 3, North Florida 2: Visiting FAU overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Jacksonville.

Rocco Pecora scored the game-winning goal for FAU (4-2-2) eight minutes into overtime off an assist from Darnell King.

After trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Owls (4-2-2) mounted a second-half charge led by Sean Hart. He recorded two goals 16 minutes apart in the second half to tie the score.

WOMEN'S GOLF

FIU golfer a top medalist: Golden Panthers junior Paula Hurtado led the field at the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational in Lexington, Ky., with a 2-under-par 69, which propelled her into a tie for top medalist honors.

Hurtado, who started the day in a tie for fifth place, eagled the 436-yard fifth hole and recorded birdies on 11 and 13, to tie for the best round of the rain-shortened 36-hole event.

The Golden Panthers finished tied for eighth as a team.

Junior Maria Ronderos and sophomore Jennifer Hirano each shot 3-over 74 to finish tied for 24th and lead the University of Miami to a 13th-place finish.

VOLLEYBALL

Virginia Tech d. Miami 27-29, 25-21, 22-25, 29-27, 15-11: Despite posting a season-high 15 ½ blocks as a team, host Miami (8-5, 1-2 ACC) was unable to get the timely blocks when needed to stop the Virginia Tech hitting attack. Virginia Tech improves to 11-3, 1-2 in the ACC.

FIU d. South Alabama 25-15, 25-15, 25-17: The Golden Panthers improved to 12-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in the Sun Belt Conference.
