UM men's tennis has solid day in Gainesville
David Simon won at No. 4 singles and teamed with Carl Sundberg in doubles to lead the University of Miami men's tennis team during the second day of the Gator Invitational on Saturday in Gainesville.
Simon defeated South Florida's Mark Oljaca 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2) in singles. He and Sundberg defeated Mark Oljaca and Romain Deridder of South Florida) 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Sundberg, ranked 79th in singles in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, is in a three-way tie for first with 12 points entering the final day of competition Sunday. Players earn six points for a singles victory in flights one and two and a flight-one doubles victory; four points for a singles victory in flights three and four and a doubles victory in flight two; and two points for a singles victory in flights five and six and doubles victory in flight three.
UM's Waylon Chin is fourth with 10 points, and Simon is in a three-way tie for ninth with four points.
VOLLEYBALL
Barry: Julia Teixiera had seven and Libby Walter had 16 assists, but it wasn't enough for Barry in a loss to host St. Leo 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.
Spenser Rigg had 14 digs and Melina Bukinac had five aces for the Buccaneers (9-3, 1-2 Sushine State Conference). St. Leo was 13-2 and 4-0.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Nova Southeastern: Paige Lindsley lost to Lina Beukirane of Saint Leo 6-4, 6-1 in the singles open consolation bracket at the ITA South Regional Championships in Valdosta, Ga.
