Nova women golfers continue their solid play

The defending NCAA Division II National Champion Nova Southeastern women's golf team picked up right where it left off last season.

The Sharks won the 38th Lady Paladin Invitational at Furman University Golf Course this past weekend.

Nova recorded a four-stroke victory over Campbell. Furman was third, and Stetson took fourth.

Sandra Changkija led the Sharks with a 3-over-par 147 (75-72) to take individual medalists honors. Furman's Stefanie Kenoyer (149) and Campbell's Mary Mattson (149) tied for second place.

Changkija was followed by teammate and three-time All-American Maria Garcia-Austt, and fellow Sharks Fredrika Hakansson and Abbey Gittings, who all tied for 12th.

``Other than winning the national championship this is the biggest win in the history of our program,'' NSU coach Kevin Marsh said. ``Past team champions include Georgia, Florida and Duke and to add our name to that list is a great honor. I am also very proud of Sandra for adding her name to past individual champions and LPGA Hall of Famers like Betsy King, Nancy Lopez and Dottie Pepper.''

FIU

The Panthers volleyball team is 11th nationally in kills per set (14.29) and 17th (13.12) in assists per set.

Texas A&M leads the nation in both categories, averaging 15.55 kills per set and 14.76 assists per set.

FIU junior Natalia Valentin ranks ninth in the nation in assists per set with 11.71. Illinois' Hillary Haen leads the nation with 12.24 assists per set.

BARRY

The Barry University men's golf team posted a 9-under team finish (567) to earn third place out of 16 teams at the State Farm-Laker Invitational.

The Buccaneers finished one stroke behind second-place Georgia College.

Newberry shot a 278 in the second round to finish 14-under and take the title.

Barry's Chris Carlin followed up a first round 67 with a 66 in round two to earn an shot an 11-under 133, taking the individual title at the tournament.

Carlos Velez fired a 144 with two even-par rounds and tied for 18th overall as Barry's second-highest finisher.

The Bucs are currently ranked No. 2 by the Nike/GolfWorld Magazine coaches poll.

BROWARD COLLEGE

Men and women's soccer returns to Broward College as the athletic department will field men's and women's club teams.

The women's team will compete in the Broward Women's Soccer League and the men's team will play in the Broward Premier Soccer League.

Both leagues play their games at Brian Piccolo Park and both teams seasons start in January.

Tryouts for both the men and women's teams will be: Oct. 1 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Oct. 6 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

All tryout sessions will be held at the Broward College baseball complex on the A.

Hugh Adams Central Campus, located on the northwest side of campus, adjacent to College Avenue. Players wanting to try out must preregister with the athletic department at 954-201-6997.
