• UM women's golf coach to retire

  University of Miami women's golf coach Lela Cannon will retire at the end of the 2009-10 season, the university announced Friday. Cannon is in her 27th season as the Hurricanes' coach.

• Miami team opens winter baseball league with win

  The Miami Diamantes made their debut game a dramatic one Friday night at FIU.

  Miami tied the score at 4 in the ninth inning and then pulled out a 5-4 victory over the Seminole Naturals in the 10th as the Florida Winter Baseball League began its initial season.

• Barry men's soccer sees win streak end

  The Barry men's soccer team gave up two goals in a 24-second span to lose its regular-season finale 3-1 to visiting Lynn.

  Mark Kilpatrick scored with two seconds remaining in the game for Barry (11-5-1, 5-3 Sunshine State Conference), which had won seven consecutive games. Lynn is 14-3-0 and 5-3-0.

  Barry closed out its women's soccer season with a disheartening 2-0 defeat against host Lynn University.

  Sarah Mendelsberg of the Knights (9-8-0, 3-5-0 Sunshine State Conference) scored twice, the first coming with less than 10 minutes to go until halftime and the second on a breakaway out of the back with less than five minutes to play.

• Victory in men's golf for Nova

  The Nova Southeastern men's golf team won the 54-hole Rollins College Invitational on Tuesday, its final tournament of the fall schedule.

  The Sharks finished at 21-under-par 845, three shots ahead of St. Edward's. Barry and Lynn tied for third at 16-under, and Rollins was fifth at 10-under.

• Canes shock defending champion Tar Heels

  The University of Miami women's soccer team (8-8-1, 3-4-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) upended defending national champion and second-ranked North Carolina (12-3-1, 5-3-0) 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium. UNC is the highest-ranked opponent Miami ever has defeated.

• St. Thomas will recognize Mainieri

  St. Thomas University will induct current Louisiana State and former Bobcats baseball coach Paul Mainieri as the fourth member of its Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 1.
