UM baseball rallies to win

From Miami Herald Wire Reports

Dennis Raben drove in four runs, including a tie-breaking two-run double in the top of the 10th inning, to help visiting Miami take a 7-5 victory over Duke on Friday night.

The Blue Devils spotted Miami a 5-0 lead before tying the score in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Gabriel Saade's two-run double off Miami starter Chris Hernandez highlighted the rally. Kyle Kreick drove in Saade with single.

Miami (20-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) strung together a leadoff single by Jemile Weeks, a walk to Yonder Alonso and Raben's game-winning hit to take the lead.

Duke (21-6, 4-6) put together a pair of singles with two outs to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but came away scoreless as reliever Carlos Gutierrez shut down the Blue Devils to lock up the victory.

Kyle Bellamy (3-0) got the win for Miami.

• FIU 9, Louisiana-Lafayette 1: Chris Allen pitched eight innings, and Lammar Guy homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Golden Panthers (10-17, 4-3 Sun Belt) past the host Ragin' Cajuns (10-13, 4-6).

FIU ended its five-game losing streak and snapped UL's four-game winning streak.

• Lynn 4, Saint Leo 3: Daniel Flores' two-run, walk-off home run lifted Lynn (22-10) past visiting Saint Leo.

• Miami-Dade College 14, Indian River CC 11: Victor Madrazo hit a three-run homer in support of Ray Cotiloa, who improved to 3-1 for the Sharks (34-4). Adrian Morales was 3 for 6 with a single, double and three RBI. Chris Curran was 2 for 5 with two RBI.

TENNIS

• FIU women win: The Golden Panthers won their fourth consecutive match with a 6-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (12-5) at University Park.

The No. 39-ranked Golden Panthers (9-6) first won the doubles point, and then won the match at No. 6 singles, where Maria Vallasciani beat Mia Gordon 6-4, 6-2.

• Lynn men cruise: The host Fighting Knights (11-4) picked up a pivotal Sunshine State Conference win, beating 14th-ranked Florida Southern 7-2.

• UM women rally: With the score tied at 3, sophomore Claudia Wasilewski picked up a close 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win to lead host Miami past Duke.

UM'S McKENZIE OUT

UM coach Randy Shannon said redshirt freshman receiver Jermaine McKenzie will be the only recently injured player who will not participate in the University of Miami's spring game at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Fort Lauderdale's Lockhart Stadium.

McKenzie returned to spring practice March 18, saying he had been cleared to return after sustaining a ''deep ankle bruise.'' At Friday's practice, he was seen wearing a protective cast on his left leg.

Gates open at 9 a.m. and the Canesfest autograph session is from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m.

SKINNS LEADS HOOTERS

England's David Skinns fired a 7-under-par 65 to grab a one-shot lead after two rounds of the NGA Hooters Tour's stop at Inverrary CC in Lauderhill.

Skinns turned in a bogey-free round to reach the midway point at 9-under 135, enough to overtake first-round leader Ryan Blaum of Coral Gables.

Blaum shot a 70 to stand at 136 along with Jacksonville Beach pro Russell Knox, whose 64 on Friday was the best round of the tournament. Chris Erwin (71) and Thomas Hagler (70) were another stroke back in fourth. Miami's James Vargas fell nine shots off the pace after a 74.

BOXING

Felix Pintor made his point clearly before the start of Friday night's show at the National Guard Armory. The veteran trainer predicted a victory from his fighter, Puerto Rico's Miguel Torres, who faced Cutler Bay resident and crowd favorite Jessy Cruz in the card's main event.

Two hours later, Pintor's pre-fight intuition proved prophetic. Torres capitalized from a first-round knockdown and won a unanimous decision.

Making his professional debut, Torres dropped a charging Cruz with a left to the head in the opening seconds of the fight. Cruz (1-1) was unable to mix combinations throughout the four-round bantamweight bout.

Torres, 19, won on two judges' scorecards 39-37 and 39-36 on the third.

• In other bouts: lightweight Juan Nazario won by unanimous decision over Juan Matias; junior-middleweight Tony Roman won by unanimous decision over Emmanuel Flowers; super-middleweight Robert Campbell scored a TKO over Richard Grant at 2:29 of the first round; welterweight Alberto Morales scored a TKO over Monyette Flowers when Flowers failed to answer the bell for the fifth round; lightweight Jareem Bryan won by unanimous decision over Jean Homme.
