UM pulls away from tough Bethune-Cookman; FIU falls

Miami Herald Staff and Wire Reports

The way the University of Miami is playing this season, smacking the ball around in almost at-will fashion, records will fall. One did Tuesday night as the Hurricanes defeated Bethune-Cookman 10-5 in front of 1,904 at Mark Light Field.

For the sixth consecutive game, the Hurricanes (18-2) scored 10 or more runs, topping a five-game streak last set by UM's 1998 team. Miami also won its 15th game in a row over the Wildcats to lead the all-time series 16-1, but Bethune-Cookman (14-8) made it close.

The Wildcats tied the score at 4, with four runs in the second inning, and they threatened to take the lead in the seventh during a bases-loaded situation before reliever Kyle Bellamy got the Canes out of the jam.

''The scoreboard doesn't show it,'' UM shortstop Ryan Jackson said. ``They had some chances throughout the game that could have made things interesting.''

UM coach Jim Morris agreed: ``They play to the end and they play hard. [Wednesday,] they'll give us a game again; it'll be tough.''

Jackson and Jason Hagerty came through with pivotal home runs.

''He threw me a fastball off the plate -- threw it low -- so I squared away,'' Hagerty said.

``I was worried about the wind, but it went through.''

Hagerty was 2 for 5 with three RBI and a run scored.

Jackson led UM by going 4 for 4 with four RBI and a career-high three runs scored.

Although Hagerty's and Jackson's home runs were big, the Hurricanes' bullpen kept the Wildcats in control. The Wildcats were scoreless after their four-run second.

• Tampa 11, FIU 7: Hitting has not been an issue for FIU as the team's .298 batting average would attest.

However, getting opponents out has been a problem for the Golden Panthers.

The Spartans, the two-time defending Division II champions, tagged FIU for 14 hits as the Golden Panthers (9-17) dropped their fifth game in a row. Tampa (23-4) won its 11th consecutive game.

Tuesday's game started like a slow-pitch softball game with the teams combining for nine runs in the first two innings.

Down 4-2 in the bottom of the second, FIU scored three runs to take a 5-4 lead.

Center fielder Corey Lozano and first baseman Tyler Townsend delivered RBI singles to help the Golden Panthers forge ahead.

The advantage was short-lived as Tampa struck for three runs in the following inning. FIU starter Jorge Ramos surrendered seven runs (six earned) in two innings to take the loss.

The Golden Panthers closed the gap to 9-7 in the eighth, but Tampa catcher Leo Alvarez hit a two-run home run in the ninth to provide some cushion.
