FSU quarterback Ponder OK after auto accident

TALLAHASSEE -- Four days after leading Florida State to a victory at Miami, sophomore quarterback Christian Ponder found himself in a harrier situation.
Ponder and punter Graham Gano were returning from a speaking engagement at a Tallahassee middle school Wednesday when another driver swerved into their lane at a busy intersection. Ponder's SUV was nearly totaled, but he and Gano were not injured.
''I'm fine,'' said Ponder, who was not cited in the accident. ``It was a pretty bad wreck, actually.''
Both players practiced at full speed Thursday.
FULLBACK DISMISSED
Coach Bobby Bowden said that senior fullback Joe Surratt, who has had a checkered career at FSU, is no longer part of the team. Bowden declined to give any further details. Surratt was suspended last fall after he was arrested following a bar fight. He started one game this season and had one rushing attempt for 6 yards.
UM statisticians, who originally credited FSU with a minus-29-yard rushing attempt on a safety Saturday, have changed the play to a punt for negative yardage. That means the Seminoles ran for 310 yards on 53 attempts.
