TALLAHASSEE -- The poise freshman quarterback E.J. Manuel displayed in his first career start will be tested Saturday by a blitz-happy Maryland defense.

The Terrapins rank near the bottom of the Atlantic Coast Conference in most statistical categories -- they are last in scoring defense and passing defense, and next-to-last in yards allowed and red-zone defense -- so they blitz a lot and vary their schemes.

``I'm sure they'll have some new things and new wrinkles,'' offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said. ``But, for the most part, [Manuel's] rules and his principles of what he has to do, he understands them.''

Through 10 games, the Terrapins have 25 sacks, tied for second in the ACC. FSU has given up 17 sacks -- only three teams have given up fewer.

BOWL BENEFITS

If the Seminoles defeat Maryland, they could accomplish two goals: Extend the nation's longest bowl streak to 28 years and also get a head start on the 2010 season.

Fisher said the biggest benefit to playing in a bowl game is the extra two weeks of practice: ``I've always thought it's huge,'' he said. ``It's like having another spring practice.''
