FIU's Reams, Leavine, R. Jones see action

ppelegrin@miamiherald.com

Running back Julian Reams, left tackle Andy Leavine and defensive lineman Reggie Jones, who were uncertain for Saturday's game, all played.

Reams, who sustained a bruised calf last week, took the first handoff from quarterback Paul McCall.

Leavine, who had not played since the season-opening loss to Kansas because of a foot injury, entered the game in the second quarter.

Jones, back on the defensive line after missing the first four games because of a violation of team rules, entered the game in the first quarter.

MIRROR IMAGE?

Several similarities exist between FIU and North Texas -- teams that hired new coaches last season.

FIU coach Mario Cristobal and North Texas coach Todd Dodge each entered Saturday's game with a career 2-14 record in his career.

The Golden Panthers and the Mean Green have primarily homegrown rosters -- 85.4 percent of FIU's players come from Florida and 90.2 percent of North Texas' roster grew up instate.

North Texas has played 16 freshmen this season. FIU has played 15 freshmen.

RECORD DAY

Freshman receiver T.Y. Hilton etched his name in the Golden Panthers' record book during the first half Saturday.

Hilton had 138 receiving yards by the second quarter, the most yards by an FIU receiver in the first half of a game.

With his 73-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter, Hilton had the second-longest touchdown catch in the program's six-year history.

Only former FIU tight end Sam Smith's 89-yard touchdown catch from former quarterback Josh Padrick was longer.
