Freshmen make impact for FIU football
FRESHMEN MAKING AN IMPACT
Because of numerous injuries, FIU has had to press plenty of freshmen into action this season.
The Golden Panthers have played 16 true freshmen this season, which trails only Tulane (17) in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Although some of the Golden Panthers freshmen might not have been ready to play at the beginning of the season, they have produced.
Freshman safety Jonathan Cyprien is second on the team with 59 tackles and third with 37 solo tackles.
Cyprien also recovered a fumble that led to FIU's game-winning touchdown drive against North Texas last Saturday.
Freshman Tourek Williams is second among the defensive linemen with 24 tackles and five tackles for loss. Williams also blocked a field goal in overtime against Louisiana-Lafayette two weeks ago to secure an FIU win.
And freshman defensive lineman Andrew Mattox, who was the Osceola County Defensive Player of the Year last season, has started to emerge since playing his first game three weeks ago.
Mattox had three tackles and 1 ½ tackles for loss as the Golden Panthers shut out the Mean Green in the second half.
