The first FIU depth chart of the season contained few surprises. It did serve as an affirmation of redshirt junior Richard Burrows’ ascent, as he’s listed as one of the starting wide receivers alongside redshirt junior Dominique Rhymes.
Burrows didn’t play as a redshirt freshman two years ago and played in only five games last year. He made one 6-yard reception.
“The biggest thing with him has been consistency,” coach Ron Turner said during Monday’s Conference USA weekly coaches conference call. “He and Rhymes have been the most consistent receivers in camp as far as making plays and getting open.”
Turner also said junior starting quarterback E.J. Hilliard does everything much better than a year ago. Still, freshman Alex McGough could see playing time Saturday in the season opener against Bethune-Cookman “on the second, third or fourth series or maybe in the second quarter.”
That’s not the only extreme youth possible on the field for FIU. Freshman Alex Gardner is listed third on the depth chart, but has been getting reps ahead of the other running backs aside from junior Lamarq Caldwell.
