Joey Grosso, the 22-year-old Lighthouse Point resident and former Penn linebacker who died Wednesday while scuba diving on the first day of lobster mini-season, had been added to the 105-man Miami Hurricanes football roster Tuesday, UM confirmed Thursday.
UM spokesman Chris Yandle said Grosso had not yet been assigned a jersey number but was being counted as a walk-on. Grosso was about to begin UM law school.
Grosso graduated from Penn in May with a major in philosophy, politics and economics, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian, which printed the following statement from Penn football coach Al Bagnoli: “Joe was a terrific young man, an accomplished student and an outstanding player. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family during this very difficult period.”
Grosso finished with 43 tackles, a fumble recovery and interception in 31 college games over his final three seasons. He would have been eligible to play immediately for UM.
Never miss a local story.
“This has been the most tragic 24 hours that anyone in our family has ever experienced,” said Michael Becker, Grosso’s first cousin. “He was a diehard UM fan — our whole family is. He didn’t even care about playing; he just wanted to say he was a Miami Hurricane. It meant the world to him.”
