Video footage was released Thursday showing Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston stealing crab legs April 29 from a Publix supermarket in Tallahassee.
Winston, who is also a relief pitcher, was suspended by the baseball team and reinstated four days later after completing 20 hours of community service, reportedly janitorial work. Football coach Jimbo Fisher has said he doesn’t plan to punish Winston further.
The video footage shows Winston walking up to the seafood counter, picking up crab legs and crawfish – reportedly worth about $33 – and walking out without paying.
The incident, though not serious in criminal terms, raised further questions about Winston’s character. The quarterback was accused of sexual assault last fall but prosecutors declined to file charges following an investigation.
In a recent interview, Winston’s father Antonor said his son should have someone around him “24/7” and that his family and FSU had “dropped the ball” regarding the quarterback, who will be a sophomore this fall.
Winston, 20, led the Seminoles to an undefeated season and national championship this past season, during which he won the Heisman Trophy as college football’s top player.
