Salgado TKO's Linares for title

The Sports Network

Juan Carlos Salgado captured the WBA super featherweight title Saturday with a first-round TKO of previous champion Jorge Linares.

Salgado (21-0-1, 15 KOs) remained unbeaten and earned his first career major title while handing Linares his first-ever defeat.

Linares (27-1-0, 18 KOs) went down twice in the short bout, which was put to a halt after just 73 seconds of action. This was his second defense of the super featherweight crown he won last November with a fifth-round TKO of Whyber Garcia. He fashioned an eighth-round TKO of Josafat Perez in his last bout in June.

Also Saturday, Japanese veteran Toshiaki Nishioka retained his WBC super bantamweight title when Ivan Hernandez called it quits after the third round of their scheduled 12-round bout.

Nishioka (35-4-3, 22 KOs) has won his last 12 fights and made his third successful defense of the title he won in September 2008 with a unanimous decision over Napapol Kiatisakchokchai. The 33-year-old southpaw posted TKOs of Genaro Garcia and Jhonny Gonzalez in his last two outings.

Hernandez (25-4-1, 15 KOs) had won his last three fights before Saturday. The last two came against opponents with a combined one victory.
