The NBA has announced that former star center Dikembe Mutombo will join the league as a global ambassador, a newly created position.

Mutombo will participate in a number of international NBA events, including Basketball without Borders, a global development program. He will also work with Hall of Famer Bob Lanier on outreach efforts.

Noted for his humanitarian efforts, Mutombo started his own foundation in 1997 to improve living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a major achievement the opening of a $29 million, 300-bed hospital in the capital city of Kinshasa.

Mutombo retired after the 2008-09 season, his 18th in the NBA. During his time in the league, he was named the defensive player of the year four times and became the second-leading shot-blocker of all-time, trailing only Hakeem Olajuwon.
