HEAT 99, MAGIC 98

Michael Beasley's putback dunk lifts Miami Heat past Orlando Magic

Dwyane Wade struggled, but his late play -- and Michael Beasley's putback of Wade's miss with 1.6 seconds left -- lifted the Heat.

Dwyane Wade set it up -- even if it wasn't really a set-up.

And Michael Beasley knocked it down -- even if it might have been against the rules.

Regardless of aesthetics or potential violations, the duo of Wade and Beasley helped the Heat to a dramatic 99-98 win over the Magic on Wednesday.

Wade had shaken off an awful shooting night to score 16 points in the fourth quarter, nine of them from the foul line, as the Heat turned an 11-point deficit into a five-point advantage in the final quarter.

But it took a Wade miss in the final seconds to seal the deal. With 1.6 seconds remaining, Beasley caught Wade errant jumper and dunked it to give the Heat the win.

Magic players were looking for an offensive interference call on the play, and replays showed it was at least a close call.

``When it touched my hand, I was just thinking dunk it, because I was underneath the basket almost,'' said Beasley, who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. ``I honestly wasn't thinking about no [offensive interference].

``Well, I was. I was looking directly at the ref, and he was running back the other way, so I like, `All right, it's good.' ''

Beasley was only in the game in the final seconds because James Jones had fouled out when he intentionally fouled Jason Williams with 9.5 seconds left and the Heat trailing by one.

Williams, who had a brilliant first three quarters and finished with 25 points and eight assists in his first game against the Heat since leaving Miami two seasons ago, missed both free throws to set up the final play.

``Michael was focused, and every timeout he was right over my shoulder and knew what was going on,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of his second-year forward. ``Dwyane's trying to claim that was an assist. Not a chance.''

Wade admitted that the final play was not a pass, but an off shot. But that doesn't mean he didn't assist in the win.

Wade had been 3 of 14 in the first three quarters for eight points, struggling mightily and letting it frustrate him.

In the fourth, though, he took over the point-guard duties and kept his game on the perimeter against the Magic.

He hit some long jump shots and forced Michael Pietrus and Matt Barnes into a handful of fouls. Pietrus even fouled Wade on a three-point shot -- a call Wade had been lobbying for the entire game.

``He got called for it at the wrong time,'' Wade said. ``He did it right in the open, and I got three free throws out of it.''

Spoelstra said he decided to go without a traditional point guard for most of the fourth simply to shake things up with his team down 11.

Wade decided he would stick to the perimeter because the Magic put so many bodies between him and the rim whenever he did drive the ball.

``It's tough against this team, especially against Dwight [Howard],'' Wade said. ``He just blocks the middle. I tried to get some space and get my shot going.

``I started hitting my shots, and that was good, because it was hard getting down there.''

After hitting the three free throws following the Pietrus foul, the Heat led by five with 5:04 remaining. Miami maintained a lead until Howard tied the game with a pair of free throws with 51 seconds left.

Then Vince Carter, who Wade blocked on the previous possession, hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left that looked like it might be the decisive basket.

``That's Vince,'' Wade said. ``That's what he does. We'll take our chances on it with the percentages. It was a deep shot, I contested it, and he hit it. All I could do was look at him and smile.''

But after Udonis Haslem tipped in a Wade miss and Williams missed two free throws, the scene was set for Wade and Beasley.

``I honestly thought he was going to drive to the basket,'' Beasley said of Wade. ``All season, every time he drives my guy loses sight of me.

``It feels good to gain their trust slowly but surely with the coaches. I can only build from here.''

Jones scored 16, his high as a member of the Heat, and Jermaine O'Neal added 13 points and 16 rebounds.

``It's a big win, coming off losing two road games in Atlanta and Toronto,'' Wade said. ``And to come back and get it in the fourth quarter was real big.''
