Houston Astros left-hander Mike Hampton is scheduled to have surgery on his left rotator cuff Tuesday.
Hampton told the club in late August that he was shutting it down for the season to undergo multiple surgeries, which also includes procedures on both his knees, in an attempt to come back healthy for 2010.
His rotator cuff surgery will take place at the Hospital For Special Surgery in New York and be performed by Dr. David Altcheck. A long-term prognosis will be made after the surgery.
The 37-year-old made his return to Houston in 2009, having played with the Astros from 1994-99, and went 7-10 with a 5.30 earned-run average over 21 starts.
He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 18 with soreness in his left shoulder, and tried soft toss to rehab the problem, but felt enough pain during the session to warrant a total shut-down.
