Recap: Milwaukee vs. San Francisco

The Sports Network

Matt Cain earned his first win in over a month with seven-plus strong innings, and the San Francisco Giants maintained the pace in the NL wild card race with a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Cain (13-4) had recorded four straight no-decisions and was 0-2 over his last seven starts but earned his first win since July 24 after allowing just two runs and four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in seven innings.

"Today was great by everybody," said Cain. "Obviously, the bullpen picked me up. It was huge to get three off of them."

Juan Uribe homered, while Randy Winn hit an RBI double, as the Giants remained a game behind Colorado for the lead in the wild card standings.

Eugenio Velez went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the victory, San Francisco's eighth in 11 games. Brian Wilson earned his 34th save of the season.

Felipe Lopez and Prince Fielder each drove in a run for Milwaukee, which has lost four of five. Yovani Gallardo (12-11) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in six innings to absorb the loss.

"I felt a lot better today. I felt I had extra jump on my fastball and my curveball," said Gallardo. "Everything was a bit sharper today."

Uribe got the scoring started in the fourth, blasting a two-out solo homer to left to give the Giants the lead.

After the home run, Nate Schierholtz reached on an infield single and scored on Aaron Rowand's double to make it 2-0.

Milwaukee got on the board in the home half, as Ryan Braun singled with one out and scored on Fielder's double.

San Francisco restored its two-run lead in the fifth on Winn's RBI double to score Velez, who led off the frame with a triple.

Cain pitched scoreless baseball until the eighth, when he gave up a leadoff double to Jason Kendall and was replaced by Jeremy Affeldt. Kendall then moved to third on Mike Cameron's groundout and scored on Lopez's single to make it a one-run game, 3-2.

Milwaukee later put runners on the corners with two outs, but Fielder hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Wilson pitched around a one-out single in the ninth to polish off the win.
