Phillies' Ibanez, Lidge, Eyre to have surgery

The Sports Network

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez, closer Brad Lidge and reliever Scott Eyre are due to have surgery this upcoming week, the team announced Saturday.

Ibanez, 37, will have surgery Monday to repair a sports hernia. Dr. Bill Meyers will perform the procedure. Ibanez hit .272 with a .347 on-base percentage, a career-high 34 homers and 93 runs batted in for the Phillies this season, though he landed on the disabled list in the middle of the season with a groin strain and also played with an abdomen tear.

In 15 postseason games for the National League champions, Ibanez hit 14-for-54 with two homers, 13 RBI and 17 strikeouts.

Lidge, 32, is scheduled for surgery Wednesday to remove a loose body from his right elbow and will also have his right flexor/pronator tendon evaluated. Phillies team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti will perform the surgery.

The right-hander had major struggles during the 2009 season, posting a 7.21 earned run average in 67 appearances. While he made 31 saves, he also blew 11 during the regular season. In the playoffs, Lidge appeared in six games and did not allow a run in five of them, but he received the loss in the Phillies' Game 4 setback to the Yankees in the World Series.

Eyre, 37, is scheduled for surgery Monday with Ciccotti to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. The left-hander made 42 appearances this season and had a 1.50 ERA in 30 innings.
