An emotional day that began with a war of words between two of their leaders in the clubhouse ended with a lot of warm-and-fuzzy feelings for the Marlins courtesy of Wes Helms' veteran bat.

Helms' walk-off home run off reliever Mike Gonzalez with one out in the ninth inning helped the Marlins fight off the Braves 8-7 in front of 14,723 at Land Shark Stadium -- and remain within striking distance in the National League wild-card race.

``I think it definitely boosts the level of intensity,'' said Helms, whose blast to the teal seats in left field was his first walk-off home run since he played for the Brewers in 2004 and the fourth of the season for the Marlins.

``When you win in dramatic fashion, it gives everybody confidence; it makes everybody feel good. You go home, you leave the field today with great feelings and hopefully it carries over to the next day and [Thursday] when [Ricky] Nolasco takes the ball.''

The Marlins could certainly use something good to feel about after a tough afternoon with Hanley Ramirez.

The All-Star shortstop missed his ninth game of the season Wednesday, a day after he left a loss to the Braves with a tight left hamstring and strained left calf. But the injury became a point of contention in the Marlins clubhouse when Ramirez and second baseman Dan Uggla exchanged words in front of reporters before the game.

Ramirez was scratched from the Marlins' lineup. Uggla batted in the No. 3 hole for Ramirez -- and got the Marlins bats going in the third.

UGGLA DELIVERS

Uggla tied the score at 2 when he drilled a towering two-run home run into the seats over the American League scoreboard. It was his team-leading 25th home run of the season and second in as many nights.

``Whether that fueled emotion for tonight, who knows,'' Uggla said of the riff with Ramirez. ``It happened. We're a family. I love him like a brother. We got past it and moved on. Stuff like that happens and emotions are going to fly sometimes.''

The Braves took advantage of an Uggla error in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

But the Marlins, who tied a season-high with three errors, survived their mishaps thanks to a five-run sixth.

Pinch hitter Brett Carroll delivered the big blow when he cleared the bases with a double off reliever Kris Medlen down the first-base line to give the Marlins a 5-3 lead. Carroll, who replaced right fielder Jeremy Hermida in right field eventually came around to score on Ross Gload's sacrifice fly to center.

Chris Coghlan, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-5 effort, then scored on Jorge Cantu's RBI single to center to make it 7-3.

BRAVES RALLY

However, the lead didn't hold up. The Braves loaded the bases with one out in the seventh off left-hander Dan Meyer before Chipper Jones, brought in to pinch hit, drilled a three-run double off Tim Wood to make it 7-6.

Kiko Calero survived a bases loaded, two-out jam to end the seventh, then retired all three batters he faced in the eighth. But Leo Nuñez started the ninth by giving up a homer to Yunel Escobar.

After Cantu popped out to start the ninth inning, Helms drilled a 3-2 pitch to cap the Marlins' eighth walk-off victory off the season.
