After he and Cody Ross hit back-to-back home runs Sunday to deliver a victory for the Marlins, Dan Uggla said the two of them needed to keep it going if the Marlins are to reach the playoffs.
``It's our time. We've been riding on Hanley's and Jorge's back long enough,'' Uggla said, referring to Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu. ``We've got to start picking up some slack, start doing our part, getting on base and driving in runs.''
Uggla began the day hitting .226 and had gone 0 for 9 with five strikeouts in the Cubs series before stroking his game-tying home run in the ninth.
Uggla said he felt as if he hit rock bottom Saturday when he looked at three consecutive strikes with the bases loaded and one out in a game the Marlins trailed 6-5 at the time.
``Obviously, it's been a test, a mental struggle,'' Uggla said. ``I saw a ton of sliders [against the Cubs] and finally put the whole [series] into one thing. Everything just kind of went right for me in that one swing, and I'm thankful it finally did.''
Ross, too, has been slumping. Since the All-Star break, he had gone 8 for 56 with only three RBI heading into Sunday. But he snapped out of it with a tying home run in the seventh and the game-winning blow in the ninth off Kevin Gregg.
LINDSTROM LOOKS GOOD IN RETURN
Matt Lindstrom returned to the mound for the Marlins on Sunday for the first time since June 23, pitching a scoreless eighth inning against the Cubs.
Lindstrom, who had been on the disabled list with a sprained right elbow, was topping out at 95 to 97 mph, slightly below his maximum. He said he expects his velocity to increase with more work.
``I was throwing good breaking balls,'' Lindstrom said of Sunday's outing.
BADENHOP ON DISABLED LIST
The Marlins placed pitcher Burke Badenhop on the 15-day disabled list with a sore neck and recalled right-handed pitcher Tim Wood from Triple A New Orleans. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Brian Sanches, who entered in relief of Badenhop on Saturday and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, probably would take over long-relief duties.
Ramirez was not in Sunday's lineup because of a sore left knee, the result of being hit by a pitch Saturday by the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano. Ramirez will likely return to the lineup in Washington on Tuesday when the Marlins open a six-game trip.
Anibal Sanchez went 3 2/3 innings in a rehab start Sunday for Single A Jupiter. Sanchez, who is on the DL with a sprained right shoulder, is expected to make at least three more rehab outings before the Marlins consider activating him. He gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk in Sunday's outing. He struck out three.
Gonzalez said Andrew Miller, who is on the seven-day disabled list at New Orleans, probably won't pitch again for two weeks.
