South Florida soccer fans will get to see three World Cup teams without having to travel to Brazil this summer, as Sun Life Stadium hosts two tune-up matches in early June.
England’s national team will face Ecuador on June 4 (3 p.m.) and Honduras on June 7 (4:45 p.m.). The English team will hold a training camp in South Florida before heading to Brazil for its June 14 opener against Italy in Manaus.
“We are excited to bring two more top-quality international matches to Miami,” Relevent Sports CEO Charlie Stillitano said. “Miami continues to be a premier soccer market in this country, and we have no doubt that the area’s fans will come out to watch England prepare for the 2014 World Cup against two teams that will also participate in Brazil.”
England, playing in its 14th World Cup, finished first in its European qualifying group. The team is led by Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) and Frank Lampard (Chelsea).
Ecuador placed fourth in South American qualifying. The team is coached by Colombian Reinaldo Rueda and features Antonio Valencia (Manchester United), Jefferson Montero (Morelia) and Felipe Caicedo (Lokomotiv Moscow).
Honduras finished third in CONCACAF. Los Catrachos include Boniek Garcia of the Houston Dynamo and Wigan Athletic’s Roger Espinoza. Ticket information will be announced at a later date.
