High honor: Silver Knight honorable mentions
The Miami-Dade Silver Knight Awards -- bestowed on high school seniors who are standouts in their communities and classrooms -- were awarded May 20 during a ceremony at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the awards, which are sponsored by American Airlines, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida and the Blank Family Foundation.
Judges in a variety of South Florida professional fields chose the winners based on their applications, nominating letters and interviews with the students.
The Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald 2008 Silver Knights awards ceremony will be televised at noon July 2 on WBFS-UPN 33.
In addition to each winner, there were three honorable mentions in each category. Each received $500 and a plaque.
