Q: Time bell rings for 2-8-12. Thanks to all. Plan as of now is to be back at it next Wednesday same time same channel.

Answered 02/08/12 13:59:41 by Greg Cote

A: Strong, bounce-back response this week. Thanks again. Til next week, watch for my general sports columns, read my blog religiously and give us a follow on Twitter @gregcote. Ciao.

Q: Ricky Williams kept his Heisman trophy in Gonzalo LeBatard's garage for a year when he was out of the country. What's the most random, bizarre item you would feel comfortable admitting you have in your garage? Either yours or someone else's, doesn't matter.

Answered 02/08/12 13:57:52 by Greg Cote

A: Scotty, oddly enough I kept Gonzalo LeBatard's Heisman trophy in MY garage! But seriously, an interesting question without an answer as interesting. I'd probably nominate a slew of plastic-wrapped comic books from the '60s but I suppose that's ordinary garage-type crap.

Q: Loved your LeBron column. Who has most impressed you on the Heat this season?

Answered 02/08/12 13:55:28 by Greg Cote

A: Danny, LeBron is No. 1, of course. Having an MVP season. Chris Bosh has raised his game from last season. Also really like the point guard play right now. Rookie Norris Cole has impressed, and his arrival I think has lit a fire under Mario Chalmers and raised HIS game.

Q: Greg, I'm thinking if Peyton signs, then he will be ready to play. He won't sign if he thinks he will embarrass himself. He's probably been throwing lasers to Reggie Wayne when no cameras are around. Agree?

Answered 02/08/12 13:51:27 by Greg Cote

A: Jake, I think it'll be all or nothing with Peyton. He's either 100% and he plays, or isn't 100% and he doesn't. That's why any contract he signs will be conditional on absolute medical clearance. Indications are he'll be ready to go as the 2012 season begins, but I'd not bet big on that quite yet.

Q: This year marks the 20th anniversary of Ron Fraser's last season as the head baseball coach of the University of Miami. It does not seem that long at all, does it? I remember when he retired, one of the reasons that he gave was that the men in his family tended not to live long past the age of 60. Well, Coach is 78 now and, as far I can tell, still going strong. Jim Morris has done a stellar job, but, damn, I miss Ron Fraser. Do you have a Fraser story or memory that you can share?

Answered 02/08/12 13:49:13 by Greg Cote

A: Walter, I have too many Ron Fraser stories and fond memories to fit in a chat format. He's the father of that program, always will be, and although Jim Morris does a great job, UM baseball IS Ron Fraser.

Q: Just read on your blog about the "50 must-read stories on MiamiHerald.com from 2011" Don't you think the ultimate result is faulty and also unfair? The readers that have subscriptions are not counted. They tend to be older readers (like myself) that spend a lot of time reading many articles on the printed paper. Most of those subscribers do not go online to register a "hit" on the articles they read. Do you agree?

Answered 02/08/12 13:45:27 by Greg Cote

A: Jose, you make a good point, although I think stories of interest -- generally speaking -- are stories of interest whether one is reading the newspaper or clicking buttons online. I love readers still loyal to the inky-pulp editions! If more people were noble, heroic traditionalists like yourself and not so damn cheap, the American newspaper would still be rightly thriving!

Q: Apart from DLHQ, what are the top priorities on your DVR right now? Also, I know you say you generally don't have time for new movies, but, just in case, have you seen any of the award-fodder films this year?

Answered 02/08/12 13:42:38 by Greg Cote

A: Insignificant, I saw The Help, thoroughly a chick-flick but also a great movie and more emotional than I'd expected. My TV tastes run to shows like Boardwalk Empire, Shameless and (please come back) Curb Your Enthusiasm. Don't see much of Dan's DLHQ because I don't watch much sports TV at all other than games. Although Dan's show is fresh, different, good and I love Papi.

Q: Mr. Cote, what do you think will be Ricky Williams' legacy?

Answered 02/08/12 13:39:27 by Greg Cote

A: Shawnna, his legacy will be that of a gifted running back and a complex man. Brilliant, troubled, a person of conflict and depth and ultimate enlightenment. I doubt we'll see another like him. (Gratuitous plug: My latest blogpost has a Ricky poll. Go vote in it).

Q: The other side of the coin in today's quarterback-driven NFL is that you need multiple pass rushers in order to beat good offenses. One pass rusher is the same as no pass rusher as they can be double teamed away (see Wake, Cameron). We know from last year's draft that Jeff Ireland is spineless and visionless and probably thinks Matt Moore is 'good enough' that he won't have to risk his reputation trying to actually fix the team - so do you think they might look at a pass rusher with their first pick? Dolphins had a great run defense last season, only let up one run over 25 yards and it only went for 34 yards - but fat lot of good it did having a fat load of Solia and Langford anchoring the line.

Answered 02/08/12 13:34:58 by Greg Cote

A: I am..., yeah but I'd also make the point Brady completed an SB-record 16 straight passes against NYG's mighty pass rush. Point taken, though. Miami needs a second sack force along with Cam Wake and this is a strong draft for pass rushers. If Dolphs land Peyton and don't top-draft a QB I think a sack man is the best bet for their first-round pick.

Q: It is halftime of today's chat...

Answered 02/08/12 13:31:45 by Greg Cote

A: Speaking of halftime, now if Giselle Bundchen had criticized Madonna for lip-syncing, I'd have been all for it.

Q: When you found out that Miami beat Duke on the road in men's basketball, did you, for a brief moment, begin to think that perhaps the Mayans were right? Nobody with a brain is blinded by what Haith is doing in Missouri, a team returning 8 upperclassmen from a 21-win team. For a program that can't attract elite talent, you need an X's and O's coach. That's what Jim Larranaga appears to be. Unless they lose to Virginia Tech, of course.

Answered 02/08/12 13:30:38 by Greg Cote

A: Ferdie, yeah lets see if UM men are for real or if Duke was just a one-off aberration. After V-Tech its two ranked opponents in a row (I think) so the next three games should tell if winning in Durham was a mirage or real. Like Larranaga so far, though, including the salesmanship, which this program still sorely needs.

Q: marlins wonlose record.

Answered 02/08/12 13:27:41 by Greg Cote

A: Teddy, you were in such a hurry you didn't have time for capitalization or a question mark? Haven't properly studied in detail what the other NL East teams have done to improve so I won't be specific yet, but I like Miami as an above-.500 team in the playoff chase. Lot of exciting pieces. That and the new park should make for a memorable year.

Q: Here is a blog idea for ya, Have the guys comment on the most nagging , craziest thing their wives have done to drive them nuts....

Answered 02/08/12 13:25:16 by Greg Cote

A: FZB, I would but I think that topic would cause mass overload and break the Internet.

Q: Real talk, Greg -- where is this Peyton Manning situation going? If he's sincere about basically playing for incentives, so that the franchise that signs him doesn't wind up spending millions of dollars for nothing if he can't go, then the reward outweighs the risk to the point where it's laughable. (Then again, I can completely see Stephen Ross and Daniel Snyder getting into a starstruck bidding war.) He has a home down here (as does just about every athlete in the western world), and all the alleged insiders are saying that Miami is the current favorite. Put on your turban stolen from Carnac the Magnificent's attic and tell us Dolfans who have been desperate for any good news for over a decade now -- what's going to happen?

Answered 02/08/12 13:23:49 by Greg Cote

A: Weasel, couldn't find Carnac's turban so I am wearing the purloined sequinned hat formerly worn by Dolfan Denny. I think Miami has a very strong chance to get P.Manning. I don't think Ross will be outspent. I'd call Dolphins a narrow frontrunner at this point.

Q: Greg, in your opinion does the NCAA go after the Miami program, or do they sanction the individuals who were actually involved and responsible during the Shapiro crap?

Answered 02/08/12 13:19:22 by Greg Cote

A: Island, no they'll hold the program/school responsible under the umbrella, "lack of institutional control." But Golden's successful pitch to recruits was that some of the punishment already is in the past, with a bowl already voluntarily forfeited plus all those suspensions. I'd guess sanctions are still coming, but not severe ones.
