Q: Hi,Dr Baumann...could u pls tell me if Tri-luma can fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that has occurred after scratch/abrasion as well as other sun spots on my legs? Can I use it twice a day for 6 months? Thank u.
Answered 01/04/11 12:16:33 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: Yes you can use it for hyper-pigmentation, however , only for 3 mos. then you take a 1 month break and use a Retinol alone . Then you can go back to your Tri-Luma .Submitted by Karen from New York
Q: I am considering adding a vitamin c product to help with my hyperpigmentation. Which vitamin c product would you recommend, and where in my routine would I add it. My current routine is: Morning- replenix cf, epiduo, sunscreen, Evening- replenix cf, relastin skin revitalizer, tazorac. Thank you so much for your time!
Answered 01/04/11 12:14:59 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: If your skin is not sensitive you can use a Vitamin C Serum after you cleanse in the morning or after your Tazorac . You can alternate with the Relastin and The and Replenix .Submitted by ushakiran from n.delhi
Q: i have senstive skin .i have acne proBLEM AND MANY WHITE HEADS please suggest me what care i do thank you
Answered 01/04/11 12:13:07 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: I would definitely see a Dermatologist and make sure they take pictures with a camera that can see underneath the first layers of your skin . This will let you know if you have underlying bacteria and if so , you can use prescription creams to help you . Always treat acne with Salicylic Acid and prevent with Benzoyl Peroxide. Ialso love the Tria Acne System .Submitted by nathalie from tampa, fl
Q: Hi Dr. B. I've been reading your book - it's been enlightening, and I've saved more than the cost of the book by not falling for products that are unsuitable for my skin. thanks so much for sharing you knowledge! I'm 43, an OSPW, and still get monthly breakouts & have mild rosacea. I've been using finacea for the past six months, it's kept the acne pretty much under control, helped with discoloration, and improved texture. however, I see the beginnings of wrinkles – lines that “stay” on my face for a few minutes after movement (crows feet, a line where my dimples are). I'd like to start using a retinol product at night (thinking of topix replenix, roc or afirm). Would the retinol be applied after finacea? If i use topix replenix, would I still need the antioxidant in the pm? Sadly, my derm isn’t much help for otc/cosmetic stuff. thanks again.
Answered 12/01/10 10:51:23 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: I would check with your Dermatologist first to see if you are a good candidate for a Retinol if you have Rosacea. If you are just using an eye cream w/retinol there should not be a problem at all . The good thing about Replenix is that the antioxidant is already included in the retinol.Submitted by glo from santa cruz

Q: I will admit that I have been extremly lazy over the years caring for my skin. I have never had issue with wrinkles or acne, until now. I am a 36 year old weight loss patient. And although I feel great after losing 148 lbs, when I look in the mirror or see pictures of myself, I look old and tired. I believe I have normal skin with frequent breakouts especially around the chin area. What skin care regiman would you recommend for me? I want a youthful, pimple free glow!
Answered 12/01/10 10:30:30 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: Congrats on the weight loss ! Take my Baumann Skin Type Quiz at skintypesolutions.com and once you know your skin type you will see which products are best suited for you. The chin area is usually hormonal , treat w/salicylic acid and prevent w/benzoyl peroxide. A good Retinol in the pm as well. Good Luck !Submitted by Stephanie from waterloo, ON Canada
Q: Dear Dr Baumann, thanks so much for your article on oxygene facials! I have been wondering about those for so long! I read somewhere that you said not to use vitamine c in combination with glycolic or salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or retinol. That the acid wd break down these ingredients and render them useless. Were you correctly quoted? I just find it strange that vitamine c, being acid, will break another acid like glycolic or salicylic…..But my main question is: what about vitamine c combined with other antioxidants like coffeeberry? For example, can I apply my Skinceuticals ceferulic before the REVALESKIN CoffeeBerry Day Cream ? Here are the ingredients of this day cream: Active Ingredients: Octinoxate 7.5%, Oxybenzone 4.0%. Inactive Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerine, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate, Isononyl Isononanoate, Pentylene Glycol, Stearic Acid, Cyclopentasiloxane and Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethicone/ Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Silica, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Protein, Oxido Reductases, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Extract, Stearyl Alcohol, Sodium PCA, Urea, Treahalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Glycosphingolipids, Phospholipids, Cholesterol, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Polybutene, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Sodium Polyacrylate, Steareth-2, Oleth-20, Triethanolamine, Acrylates/C10-30, Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Carbomer, Polysorbate 80, Polyquaternium-51, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerine, Green 3(CI 42053), Yellow 5 (CI 19140). Thanks so much for your precious help !

A: Glycolic and Salicylic Acids can break down Retinols - the easy fix is to use then in the AM and your retinols always at night . Glycolic can be used in the PM if it is in a cleanser and low in concentrate.Submitted by Jean from canada

A: The key to fighting acne is knowing your skin type and treating your skin accordingly with the right ingredients for you. You want to treat with Salicylic Acid and prevent with Benzoyl Peroxide. Go to skintypesolutions.com to find out your skin type and also look up articles I have written i regards to acne.Submitted by fahim from fort collins colorado
Q: Hi doctor how are you doing today. I have a concern that is quite bothering me. About 8 months ago I had ulthera or ultherapy done to my face; to tighten the skin. Last month on my left side of my face I got this red dot on my face and that red dot progressed to a full blown rash. Fortunately that cleared up in about 3 weeks. But this month the same thing is happening to my right side; I got this red patch of rash right on top of my cheekbone. I know for sure that ulthera is causing this. It is blocking something underneath my skin.I went to a dermatologist and he said it was just acne. Then I went to a doctor and she didn't know what it really was. She probably thought that the ulthera is causing my skin to be super sensitive. She prescribed to me antibiotics and they are not working. I got a feeling that the ulthera caused a serious adverse effect on my face. Please help me on what to do.
Answered 12/01/10 10:01:54 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: Did the Dr who did the Ultherapy on you use any type of numbing cream before the procedure ? If so , you may have been allergic to it . I would definitely go back to the Dr that did the Ulthera to treat what you are experiencing.Submitted by Marie from Raleigh, NC
Q: I am 28 and a ORNW. I have chronic cystic acne in my chin area, and an oily T zone. I am currently taking minocycline and using Tazorac nightly. I have light scarring on my chin - what what you recommend to fade/lighten them? In the AM I use CeraVe wash and Clinique Cityblock Suncreen. PM I use CeraVe with my Clairisonic and a clay mask a few nights a week.
Answered 12/01/10 09:56:31 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: You can always use a product that has lightening ingredients such as hydroquinone, licorice root, kojic acid or vitamin k. Cerave AM and PM lotions have Niacinamide in them which is a lightening ingredient as well.Submitted by Alina from Miami, Fl
Q: I have seen a Dermatologist and they suggest I get CO2 laser surgery? I have mild marks on my face and some discoloration. Can you explain the benefits and risk of this procedure? How long will it take to heal?
Answered 12/01/10 09:53:27 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: It depends on your skin color , some CO2 lasers can do more harm than good when it comes to pigmentation. You may want to see if you qualify for a lesser evasive treatment like Intense Pulsed Light first.Submitted by Karen from NYC

Answered 12/01/10 09:47:36 by Dr. Leslie Baumann

Q: Can I use Tri Luma and Renova at the same time? If so, which should I apply first and how long should I wait before I apply the second product?
Answered 11/11/10 12:25:22 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: NO ! Tri Luma is great if you are looking to rid of fine lines ,wrinkles and tackle brown patches or melasma. However, it can only be used for 3 months , then you are to give your skin a break with Renova for 1 month , then back to Tri Luma . Never at the same time.Submitted by nisha from scottsdale, az
Q: Hi Dr. Baumann, Thank you for your expert advice and excellent recommendations. I have sensitive skin and my neck in particular reacts to any sunscreen (Blue lizard/Vanicream/La Roche Posay/).My visit to two dermatologists concluded that it was neck folliculitis/contact dermatitis. The reaction subsided with Amoxycillin/Bactroban cream.I am now apprehensive to use any sunscreen or antiaging creams on my neck with the exception of Cerave lotion which hasn't caused it to recur.Should I try Coolibar sun protective clothing for the neck?I would appreciate your recommendations.Thank you Dr.Baumann.

A: I love CeraVe , if you haven't had a reaction, stick with it !Submitted by Eva from Miami
Q: Dear Dr Baumann, I have 2 questions. I am a 44 year old woman who was normal to oily (T zone) skin type and now extremely oily especially during the day plus now getting pimples all the time. What would you recommend for me?I had used azelex and works fantastic to stop the oily even when is for pimples. Question: I see lots of wrinkles around and under my eyes. I see my wrinkles similar to my mom. What other options beside botox do we have to erase these wrinkles? I had botox on my forehead and between eyebrows and I love it, but for a few weeks was very uncomfortable and experience headaches. Don't want to use is around my eyes. I have used renova but don't see much change. Thanks, Eva
Answered 11/11/10 12:20:44 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: You may want to change your Renova to Atralin, Refissa or Retin-A Micro. They are stronger than Renova and my patients love them. For your eyes, Replenix Eye Repair Cream has Retinol and my patients love it .Submitted by Lori from Pittsburgh, pa
Q: Is it ever ok for skincare products to sting/burn? I am using a Loreal moisturizer, and I like the way it makes my skin look and feel, but it burns upon initial usage, then the burning subsides. Does that mean its damaging my skin and should discontinue it? Love your books and your skintyping advice has been invaluable;can't wait for the new addition of the book!
Answered 11/11/10 12:16:41 by Dr. Leslie Baumann
A: If a product stings or burns , then your skin is sensitive to it and that makes you a Sensitive Subtype 3 . Check out my website skintypesolutions.com to see what products are best for you or you can check out the new book !Submitted by Noreen from Malden

A: I like the science behind Obagi an their products . Personally, I dont need 6 steps in the am and pm for my skin . I can achieve the same results with 3 products or 4 if you include an eye cream.
