This poll was conducted by Bendixen & Amandi International for the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald and surveyed 400 voters registered in Miami-Dade County on June 3-5. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points. A separate sampling of Cuban American voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points. Related story →

Public corruption

Background: The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office has been criticized recently for not being aggressive enough in prosecuting cases of alleged public corruption.State Attorney Kathy Fernandez-Rundle has said she is committed to fighting public corruption but there are legal limitations in how aggressive her office can be in pursuing these types of cases.

FIU Expansion

Background: Florida International University says that they have outgrown their main campus and wants to expand onto county-owned land next door to the campus on a site which is currently leased to the Dade County Youth Fair through the year 2040. Such an expansion would require the Youth Fair to move to another location within Miami-Dade county with the costs associated with the relocation, estimated between $200 and $250 million, being paid for by a combination of FIU, Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida.

Miami-Dade County Libraries

Background: The Miami-Dade County Library System is facing a budget shortfall in the next fiscal year of roughly $20 million, which could result in significant reductions in staff, hours of operations or both at libraries across Miami-Dade. Miami-Dade County has the authority to raise the property tax in order to increase funding to support the library system, which would represent an increase of an additional $25 for the average homeowner.

Turkey Point expansion

Background: Recently Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet approved a proposal by Florida Power and Light to build two new nuclear power plants at Turkey Point and the construction of new high voltage power lines along US-1 to carry the electricity. City leaders in Coral Gables, Miami, South Miami and Pinecrest have argued that the new power polls which will be 100 feet tall, are a public health hazard and will cause harm to their community's property values and economic vitality, as well as create a tremendous eyesore along US-1. FPL has argued that the new plants and power lines are necessary and will save millions of dollars in costs for FPL customers.

Miami Dade College

Background: Over the last several years, Miami-Dade College has repeatedly proposed a special referendum which would allow county voters to vote on a half-penny sales tax increase for 5 years in order to fund renovations and expansion of facilities at the college. A public vote on this issue requires permission from the Florida legislature. The legislature, led by several Miami-Dade legislators who question whether or not MDC needs additional funding, has thus far refused to allow the vote to take place.

Background: In November, Florida voters will be asked to consider a constitutional amendment allowing the use of medical marijuana if recommended by a doctor for a debilitating condition.

Lobbyist influence

Background: Over the past year, there have been a number of high profile negotiations between Miami-Dade County and private interests for various projects, including the multi-billion dollar water-sewer repair contract as well as the Dolphins, Heat and Soccer stadiums deals among others. Supporters of Mayor Carlos Gimenez believe he is negotiating in the best interests of the County, while critics have argued that lobbyists and special interests are exerting too much influence over the Mayor in the way decisions are being made on these types of projects.

Soccer stadium

Background: Retired soccer player David Beckham has been in negotiations with City of Miami and Miami-Dade County leaders about the possibility of building a waterfront stadium to house a new professional soccer team in Downtown Miami. The stadium would be built on public property on a waterfront site currently owned by the City of Miami, known as Museum Park, which includes the FEC boat slip. The Museum Park/FEC boat slip site is located next to the American Airlines Arena on Biscayne Boulevard.

AmericanAirlines Arena

Background: The Miami-Dade County Commission recently approved an extension to the lease with the Miami Heat at the American Airlines Arena for an additional 5 years with the following terms: 1) the Miami Heat will begin making payments to support county parks in the amount of $1 million per year, 2) the County would provide subsidies of $8.5 million per year to the Miami Heat for five years beginning in 2031. Critics of the deal argue that the $1 million donation is too little and that the County subsidy to the Miami Heat should be discontinued in 2031 as the original contract intended.

Sun Life Stadium renovation

Background: The Miami-Dade County Commission is being asked to consider a new proposal for the renovation of Sun Life Stadium. Under the terms being proposed by the Miami Dolphins, they would privately finance all of the renovations to the stadium and in return the county would pay a fee for future high profile events held at the stadium, such as the Super Bowl, World Cup, major concerts and other big events being brought to South Florida.
