Casey Woods writes on the intersection of parenting, politics and culture in her Saturday column The Mommy Politic. A native of Arkansas, she was a Miami Herald staff writer for six years, covering South Florida's Hispanic immigrant communities and the Latin American events that affect them. She was part of a team that won an Overseas Press Club award and a South Florida Society of Professional Journalists award for coverage of Venezuela's 2007 elections.
She began her career as a freelance journalist in South America, covering human rights and environmental issues. She earned a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a bachelor's degree from Duke University in comparative area studies and literature.
