Two lives lost
There really are no words to express the horror and sadness that I feel over the senseless loss of two young lives in Miami Springs: Charlie Peel and Nick Colmenares. I have thought often that the residents of Miami-Dade County needed to take our communities back -- from the drug dealers, the criminals with guns who shoot and kill children, or whatever it is that is against common decency. Those individuals who played a part in this sorry drama also need to be held accountable.
We all need to get mad and contact every public official and demand that something be done to stop this senseless waste of life. We need to come together, not just for a candlelight vigil, but en mass to demand change.

Better exchange
In her Nov. 5 Other Views column, Is U.S. facing a dead end?, Marifeli Pérez-Stable proposes an exchange of the ``Cuban Five'' for American fugitives living in Cuba.
One of the Five is Gerardo Hernández convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in the Feb. 24, 1996, shoot down of two unarmed civilian aircraft over international waters. He is responsible for the deaths of four human beings.
The only exchange possible for Hernández would be to trade him for the two Cuban MiG pilots who shot down the U.S. aircraft, together with the general who ordered the shoot-down. These three already have been indicted in U.S. courts, so bringing them to trial in this country would be the real start of justice in this case.

Postponed election
Sarah Palin wrote on Facebook, ``The race for New York's 23rd District is not over, just postponed until 2010,'' in responding to the defeat of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.
I guess the race for the White House is not over either, just postponed until 2012.

Help our vets
In a disgraceful move, Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., is single-handedly holding up some very important legislation for veterans. He is denying veterans a myriad of benefits and services. One of these benefits is caregiver assistance to our most wounded veterans.
This bill will provide much needed relief for those caregivers by allowing for family caregiver assistance and lodging and food assistance for attending caregivers.
Now is not the time to play petty political games with our veterans.

Healthcare debate
I am proud of President Obama and the House of Representatives for their leadership on healthcare reform. Under Obama's plan, the insurance industry will be held accountable and Americans with preexisting conditions will not be denied coverage or be dropped when you get sick. Millions of people without insurance will have quality affordable choices with a public option.
Obama is continuing to make history by working to make sure comprehensive healthcare reform in America is a reality. An unprecedented number of doctors and nurses, plus AARP, etc., is supporting comprehensive health-insurance reform.
My hope has been restored that we will be able to bring real healthcare reform to America.
ROBYN DONALDSON, Lauderhill
As I understand the House's healthcare-reform bill, it is the most irresponsible, incomprehensible legislation passed in decades. Although reform is necessary to fix a broken system, no bill should increase debt and taxes or reduce Medicare benefits. I hope our legislators will be able to fix the current system and start by rooting out fraud and abuse of Medicare and Medicaid.
