The ultimate guarantee

After the recent tragic shooting at Fort Hood, it should be clear that there are certain things that this country cannot risk happening. The safety and integrity of the men and women proudly serving in our military services must be beyond any hint of internal attack. Can there be anything more treasonous than an unprovoked killing of military personnel by one of their own?

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan should receive all rights for our country's citizens that generations before him have fought and died to provide. The presence or not of overwhelming evidence of guilt determined by a court of law must hand him his fate. Should the facts point to him as being responsible for this dastardly act is there any instance more deserving of a military firing squad than this?

Welcome headline

The Nov. 4 letter Embarrassing headline accused your paper of making a ``major gaffe'' in the Nov. 2 headline, Dolphins win third in a row, saying that since the Dolphins lost the previous week to New Orleans, that headline was inaccurate.

However, you were referring to the fact that, going back to the final game of the 2008 season, we have beaten the Jets three times in a row. I admit I did a double-take when I first read the headline. But as a long-time Dolphins fan and Jets hater, it didn't take me long to realize what you meant. Great headline.

How could they!

Kudos to The Miami Herald for putting two stories on the Nov. 3 front page that shed light on our development-crazed leaders. I can't believe that anyone could honestly consider using environmentally sensitive wetlands in the Everglades for monetary gain after residents have spoken their views.

I found it sadly ironic that the other article spotlighted how our coastline is so full of empty hotels that some are in danger of imminent foreclosure. When will we learn not to be so greedy with our precious natural resources?

Yes, dithering

An Oct. 25 letter asked if former Vice President Dick Cheney knew ``dithering'' when he saw it. Neither President Bush nor Cheney started the war. The terrorists of 9/11 started the war.

I question President Obama's abilities to make decisions and to be an effective leader. Obama had eight years during the Bush administration and nine months as president to decide what to do in Afghanistan.

It is Obama who is ``dithering.'' We are compromising our soldiers' lives every minute that goes by while the president is still unsure as to what to do in Afghanistan. Was he lying to us when he said that he had a plan?

Costly and costlier

I applaud the community leaders who have congratulated Norman Braman for his leadership against the construction of the Miami Marlins Stadium. However, this is not the first time this community has undertaken the construction of a facility for which it does not have proper construction, maintenance and programming funding.

The Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center, to be built for $254 million, cost more than $500 million. Community arts leaders expected to raise $45 million for an endowment to sustain its programming but raised less than $17 million. Taxpayers are subsidizing the center for at least $20 million per year. Taxpayers also will subsidize the stadium.
