Where's the outrage?

What sort of headline is Army doctor blamed in base rampage to describe the worst attack ever on a military installation in this country?

``Blamed,'' ``suspected,'' ``apparently.'' Are these the strongest words you can use to describe this outrage? At least you could have said, ``He is accused of'' or ``alleged'' to have murdered 13 people and wounded 31 more.

To add insult to injury, the headline is dwarfed by a larger article about birth defects in the Dominican Republic.

I'm surprised that this massacre with its worldwide coverage did not wind up on the sports page. You can do better than that.

ALBERT J. SHERIDAN, Miami

A `turbocracia'

The premise of your Nov. 4 editorial The Honduran solution is that Honduras is at fault and should capitulate to world opinion, which is expressed by writers who have little knowledge of the events or the laws of Honduras.

Manuel Zelaya, once back in office, will work to subvert the constitution, Congress and the supreme court through the use of the paid mobs, a successful technique used in Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia. There is even a new term coined as a result of such political intimidation: turbocracia (mobocracy).

It's proven to be very successful in countries like Honduras, where actual support amounts to between 10 percent and 20 percent, by making the level of support appear greater than it is and intimidating any opposition into silence and submission. This is what you are suggesting Honduras accept.

Zelaya and interim President Roberto Micheletti have agreed to accept any decision made by the Honduran Congress.

We should also support that, including a decision in the negative should that be the case.

Biking arrogance

Critical Mass bikers state they are not out to annoy motorists. However, the photo with the Nov. 1 article Bike riders find strength in numbers shows them riding in all four lanes of a one-way street. The number of bikers shown could confine themselves to the two right lanes and leave room for traffic to get past.

Picture yourself on that bus or in that car on the way home after a long day at work, late for dinner and eager to start your weekend and now having to move at a snail's pace so a bunch of arrogant bikers can exercise their right to the road.

Chief must go

New Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado has asked City Manager Pete Hernandez for the resignation of Chief John Timoney. This request could not come sooner.

I have lived in Morningside for the past five years and have learned that police protection and knowledge is an embarrassment.

A neighbor beats his children, threatens the lives of other neighbors and captures cats and slices them open to draw vultures. The police come when called and have done nothing. In most cases, they refuse to write up reports, reasoning that he is just a nuisance neighbor.

Calls to the police about the dead cats brought only a sanitation crew to clean up the carcass of one cat.

We need drastic changes at all levels of the Miami Police Department if we are going to guarantee the safety and security that residents and visitors alike deserve.

Why not hatred?

In her Oct. 30 Other Views column Peace with Jordan survives -- barely, Frida Ghitis is surprised that 80 percent of Jordanians consider Israel the enemy and that in three decades, pollsters found ``they had never seen a level of rejection comparable to the one they found among Jordanians toward Israel.''
