European healthcare puts people first

We have recently returned from a wonderful cruise of the Baltic countries, beginning in London through Copenhagen, Rostock (Germany), Tallinn (Estonia), St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm. Most of the countries have government-secured healthcare for everyone, essentially free or low cost. Russia even has optional private clinics at reasonable cost. The Danes enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world. Taxes are high in this welfare state, but education is free and healthcare is highly subsidized. Generous maternity leave is for both women and men.

Although these people are not enthusiastic about their high taxes, they are proud of their system for taking care of the health of all their people, not just the wealthy. Healthcare is regarded as a need and right, not just an opportunity for profit.

While in London, my partner had a minor injury in the hotel elevator. He was escorted to the nearby St. Thomas Hospital emergency room. It was not crowded. There was the usual assortment of ``down and outers'' (perhaps homeless?), a young man with a tiny infant and a mother with two young teenagers.

There was a short wait. When my partner was called, he showed his passport as identification and he was considered a guest of the United Kingdom. He was treated promptly and courteously by a doctor and released. There was no charge.

We can't help wondering where we went wrong on American healthcare. Who can criticize the European model, putting people's health first and not regarding these basic human needs as opportunities for profit?
