Frugal and green
Teresa Mears' Oct. 24 On The Cheap column's advice was far from the cheapest way from her house to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood or Miami International airports. If my friends' trip on Super Shuttle is common, public transit could even be quicker.
One Friday night my friend arrived at MIA at 9 p.m. and caught a Super Shuttle. it took two hours to get to his house in Kendall because the driver took the North Dade fare home first, about a 50-mile trip for my friend.
Mears could walk a couple of blocks to Biscayne Boulevard and catch bus No. 3 with a change to the J bus at 36th Street, which would get her to MIA in an hour or a little more depending on the time of day.
For a trip to FLL the No. 3 would take her north to Aventura and connect to Broward #1 which runs every 15 minutes to FLL.
These schedules would be a lot more ``frugal'' than the $40 round trip that she pays. It wouldn't work at midnight, and she probably wouldn't want to do it in the rain but I love being frugal, using public transit and living green when possible.
