Haitians convene to help their country prosper

Haitians from all over the world will convene at the Trump International Beach Resort in Sunny Isles Beach Aug. 6-9 for the 2009 Haitian Diaspora Unity Congress. Their purpose is to combine and capitalize on the resources of the Haitian diaspora to develop strategies to aid Haitians at home and abroad.

Among the topics discussed will be boosting the island's agriculture, promoting education and health, building tourism and removing roadblocks to investing. Haitian Prime Minister Michelle Pierre Louis will discuss the state of the nation as well as investment opportunities there. Former President Bill Clinton, as the United Nations' special envoy to Haiti, will address the 500 participants on Sunday. His experience in working with Haiti's government will provide insight into how to best aid Haiti and help the country develop a better standard of living.

Last year, Haiti was beset with numerous crises, from a rise in food prices to four storms that devastated the island, killing hundreds and leaving thousands homeless. Early warning and disaster preparedness are essential to prevent future catastrophes.

Also, if change does not happen soon, Haiti faces the proliferation of organized crime, including drug and gun smuggling. Terrorism preys on weak states, and Haiti could become a such a target.
