I am a military veteran of Beirut, Lebanon and have many issues that anger me from that time, especially regarding the Republican Party and the Reagan administration.
The July 31 letter “GOP witch hunt” talks about Beirut and the killing of 241 Marines/Navy corpsman and doctors on Oct. 23, 1983. Americans from the 1980s to the present continue to be blind to the fact that Ronald Reagan received security information of an eventual bombing of the Marine headquarters compound 48 hours before it actually happened and did nothing to prevent it. The only thing he did was hide this from the American people.
It infuriates me when Republicans speak about Benghazi because the murder of 241 members of the U.S military in Beirut that horrific day was my Benghazi and went under the carpet, where it remains. To the Beirut veterans, that day was the beginning of the war on terror.
