This year the Florida Legislature allocated $16 million for mental health hospitals and another $42 million for community programs and maybe one-fiftieth of the $500 million in federal funds, if Gov. Rick Scott would accept them for mental health, as was reported in the April 25 editorial, Smarter treatment for mental illness.
But this still is less than 18 percent of the $358 million budget cuts since Scott took office.
The budget was slashed by more than 50 percent of the $737 million when he was elected. The Bible says, “When did we see you sick and in prison and go visit you? Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me. ’’
Perhaps, the Bible’s authors never imagined as many people in prison as Florida has.
