Re the Jan. 20 story Key Biscayne wants to block Duran Duran: The Village of Key Biscayne is at it again — attempting to impede any event that poses any type of inconvenience to its upscale enclave, regardless of the benefits to and support from the greater community.
The truth is that major events like the Miami Open and Miami International Boat Show employ thousands of local workers, which enables them to provide for their families.
Sign, Display & Allied Trades Local Union 1175 has been involved with the boat show since its inception 75 years ago. This year, we have an estimated 500 local skilled workers dedicated to the show. Efforts to stop the 2016 boat show puts their jobs in jeopardy.
Key Biscayne should think far beyond its minor inconveniences and consider the impact of two of Miami’s marquee events, not only for the city’s international image, but for the jobs of its neighbors.
