I hope young girls take Ana Veciana-Suarez’s counsel in her Oct. 6 column, Girls: Listen to this advice.
Her piece comes at a critical time when there is growing pressure among adolescent girls to portray a certain image because of the digital age. It’s important to empower young girls by reminding them that they don’t need to limit themselves to conform to some role or to simply fit in.
As my favorite author, Thich Nhat Hanh, wrote, “True happiness and true power lie in understanding yourself, accepting yourself, having confidence in yourself.”
So instead of simply trying to fit in, I’d advise young girls to be true to themselves and never stop learning. It’s perfectly OK to break the mold. Your older self will thank you.
