The lesson to be learned from the Oct. 22 Parliament attack in Canada is that we should not stand in the way of any individual who wishes to participate in a Holy War. If the Canadian authorities had just let Michael Zehaf-Bibeau leave, it is not certain that he would have ever returned.
But what is certain is that Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, a 24-year-old army reservist who was on guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa would be alive today. Instead of endangering the lives of citizens by preventing those who want to leave Canada — or the United States, for that matter — these individuals should be allowed to go and be prevented from returning.
