Fred Grimm’s Oct. 19 column, Inner city youth football is a game apart, was so on point about youth football, especially in the African-American community. This is the very reason the Miami Police Athletic League moves to the Xtreme Youth Football League and away from Pop Warner.
Started by a police officer and others who were sickened by the shenanigans and violence in parks, this league was created to provide a safe, crime-free alternative based on character building first, athletics second.
We have had a few rough patches here and there, but as soon as we’ve moved to expel teams and coaches, the other leagues pick them up.
We hope to show we can do this the right, legal, and ethical way and start a ripple through all youth sports and after school activities.
Never miss a local story.
