FIU expansion good for community

I’m writing in support of Florida International University’s expansion to the land next to its Modesto A. Maidique Campus. I serve on the FIU School of Accounting’s Advisory Board and Board of Trustees’ Athletic Committee. And as a member of FIU’s President’s Council, I’ve been honored to act as an FIU ambassador to the community.

Expanding FIU will benefit the community in several key ways. It will allow the university to provide quality higher education for more young scholars. FIU can undertake new initiatives, and existing programs can be broadened. Studies show that Florida will need more accountants and IT professionals in the coming years. FIU is already working to fill this gap, and expansion would further energize that process.

As a member of the boards of two significant Miami-Dade not-for-profit organizations, I have a front-row seat to how keystone organizations are helping Miami grow into its potential as a world-class city. FIU is already part of it and can contribute even more with room to expand.

I applaud Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and county commissioners for their foresight in supporting the proposal. I hope the community will join me as well in advocating for the expansion.
