Re the Aug. 1 story Miami Beach considers whether to take Arthur Godfrey’s name off road: According to Miami Beach Commissioner Joy Malakoff, Arthur Godfrey no longer is relevant and not remembered by many Miami Beach residents. Based on that criteria, I suggest that the city add Ed Sullivan Drive and Hank Meyer Boulevard to the list.
How long before they consider changing Abe Resnick Boulevard? I have lived here for 68 years and believe in history and tradition. Godfrey, who put Miami Beach on the national map, is part of that history. So is Meyer, who brought Godfrey here.
Short of committing a crime or becoming a national disgrace, there is no justification for removing someone’s name. I commend Commissioner Jonah Wolfson, who has taken a sensible approach to the matter. If the real reason is perceived anti-Semitism, then say it and prove it, but to use a weak excuse of irrelevance is shameful.
