When a coach the stature of the University of Miami’s Al Golden characterizes classes as a “distraction” — however off-the-cuff his remark may have been — it doesn’t make life easier for faculty contending with academically unmotivated athletes. His comment also provides, perhaps unwittingly, support for the unionization of college football players (as at Northwestern), which UM has gone on record as opposing.
